Celebrity Madness

How many celebrities have you met, and how did you behave? After the last two days of going thru my "5's", I was thinking about celebs I've encountered and what they thought of the encounter. Going to a "meet the actor/athlete/etc" event doesn't count here, only chance encounters doing what you would have been doing anyway.

We met the actress who played Weezie on the Jeffersons, standing in line with us at DisneyWorld years back. No biggie for either of us, but a pleasant encounter.

Met NASCAR driver Michael Waltrip while we were each paying our bill at a Cracker Barrel. I acted like starstruck teenager, and he's not even that big a deal. My spouse was chatty and charming. I was a nitwit.

Met TV race announcer Jeff Hammond in an elevator. He was extremely charming, made his wife hold all his stuf so he could autograph pictures for everyone. I didn't get stupid this time.

Met Blackhawks' coach Denis Savard a few times. We chatted, he's a good guy.

Years back, met then White Sox manager Tony LaRussa in a bar. He bought drinks.

Met Bill Veeck back at old Comiskey while I was buying tickets, late in winter when no one was around. He invited me and my sidekick to join him for lunch. We had to get back to work. I will regret that decision forever.

Ran into then Governor Jim Thompson on the street one evening. It's a good story for another time.

That's a pretty short list.

Who have you encountered?

Who have I met?

Frank Thomas, at 4 am in the Palms Casino in Vegas, October 2005. (October 2005? Weren't the White Sox in the playoffs? Yes, yes they were.)

Former (then current) Indiana governor Joe Kernan at Roccos, in South Bend Indiana. Carolyn's dad was in town for a basketball game and took us out to dinner with "an old friend." That was a fun dinner.

Mike Ditka, at a Halloween party.

Clyde Drexler, in the Cabo airport. I only knew who he was because of his turn on Dancing With the Stars.

Who have I met celebrity-wise? Probably more than I know, but since I usually walk around thinking about everything and nothing in particular, I really don't "notice" people. But I did have a local celebrity encounter one day and I can totally relate to how you acted when you met Mike Waltrip. A Chicago TV weatherman lives in our town; but so do a lot of other people that have their own brand of fame. So while it was interesting to drive past his house and check it out, I found no other fascination with this person. However, one day while driving through his sub-division, I came upon two young kids, riding new bikes, that were still way beyond their skill level. So as not to rattle them and send them crashing into each other and probably the ER as well, I completely stopped until they were safely past my car. It was then that I noticed that the parent riding behind them, bore a strong resembelance to the weatherman. Just as I was having that thought, he said, "Thanks". I immediately knew the voice as the same voice that comes out of my TV every day and was too dumb-founded to speak. He probably thought I could at least have said "You're welcome", or "no problem"; no not me, a gaping stare suited that occasion just fine.
